Engine Diagnostics &
Check Engine Light Service
That light on your dashboard is your vehicle asking for help. We give you accurate answers, digital inspection reports with photos, and honest recommendations — not guesswork. Serving Victoria, Saanich, and the surrounding communities from 400 Burnside Rd E.
From Check Engine Light to Peace of Mind
Modern vehicles are rolling computer systems. A single warning light can be triggered by hundreds of possible faults across the engine, transmission, emissions, electrical, and sensor systems. Without proper diagnostics, a shop is essentially guessing — and guessing costs you money in parts and labor you don’t need.
EDP Automotive does it differently. We start with the scan, but we don’t stop there. We verify the code, road-test the vehicle, inspect the relevant components, and only then make a repair recommendation. You leave with a diagnosis you can trust and a written estimate you don’t have to second-guess.
How We Diagnose Your Engine
Every vehicle that comes in for diagnostics follows the same five-step process. We don’t skip steps, and we explain what we found at each stage.
What Your Warning Lights Are Telling You
Eight of the most common dashboard warnings, what they actually mean, and how urgent each one really is.
Check Engine (Steady)
Usually an emissions-related fault — oxygen sensor, evap system, catalytic converter, or misfire.
Check Engine (Flashing)
An active misfire serious enough to damage your catalytic converter. Bring it in immediately.
ABS Warning
Anti-lock brake fault — commonly a wheel speed sensor or ABS module. Regular brakes still work.
Oil Pressure
Urgent. Low oil pressure can destroy an engine in minutes. Pull over safely and call us.
Coolant Temperature
Your engine is overheating — thermostat, water pump, or head gasket. Don’t keep driving.
Battery / Charging
Despite the icon, this is about the charging system. Likely a failing alternator or belt.
Traction / Stability
Often shares sensors with ABS. A wheel speed sensor or steering angle sensor is the usual culprit.
TPMS (Tire Pressure)
One or more tires is significantly off, or a TPMS sensor has failed. We can inspect and reprogram.
When There’s No Light, But Something’s Off
Not every problem turns on a warning light. Many of the most common driveability complaints don’t trigger a code at all — which is exactly why a proper diagnostic process matters. Conditions we routinely diagnose include:
- Rough idle or shaking at stoplights
- Engine misfires and hesitation
- Hard starting or no-start condition
- Stalling while driving
- Loss of power on acceleration
- Unusual exhaust smoke
- Knocking, ticking, or whining noises
- Poor fuel economy
- Vibrations at highway speeds
- Failed emissions or inspection
- Surging RPMs at idle
- Sluggish acceleration
Professional Equipment, Not a Parts-Store Code Reader
A $30 code reader can tell you a code is stored. Professional diagnostic equipment lets us read live sensor data, command actuators, view freeze-frame data from the moment the fault occurred, and compare what we’re seeing against manufacturer specifications.
We use OEM service information for every make and model that comes through the shop — domestic, European, Asian, gas, and diesel. That’s how a real diagnosis happens: not by reading a code, but by testing what the code points to.
Beyond the Basics
Some diagnostic work calls for specialized expertise. Whether your vehicle runs on diesel or you’re chasing an electrical gremlin, we’ve got dedicated services for both.
Diesel Diagnostics
Cummins, Duramax, Powerstroke. Fuel injection, turbochargers, EGR, DPF regen issues, and high-pressure fuel pump diagnosis.

A surprising number of engine problems are actually electrical — corroded connectors, chafed wires, failing grounds, sensors reading wrong.

EXCELLENT SERVICEPosted on Colin SvobodaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I would highly recommend EDP Automotive Services. Fran, Steve, and Daryl, were once again great to deal with. There aren't many garages I trust with my vehicles. When other shops refer folks to EDP it says a lot about their reputation and expertise. When it comes to custom suspension work or alignments this is the place. I'll be back in the future and recommend EDP to any friends or family.Posted on Dan ClaxtonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great people, very friendly.
