Oil Change Services
Victoria, BC
Fresh oil is the single most important thing you can do for your engine. EDP Automotive provides conventional, synthetic, and high-mileage oil changes — plus a full multi-point inspection with every service. Backed by our 12-month / 20,000 km guarantee. Serving Victoria from 400 Burnside Rd E since 1966.
Professional Oil Changes. Right Oil. Right Interval. Every Time.
Motor oil lubricates every moving part inside your engine, reduces friction, carries heat away from critical components, and keeps contaminants suspended until they’re trapped by the filter. Over time, oil breaks down, loses its protective properties, and turns into a thick sludge that accelerates engine wear.
At EDP Automotive, we use top-tier oils and filters matched to your vehicle’s manufacturer specifications — the right viscosity, the right type, for your engine. Every oil change includes a full multi-point inspection so you leave knowing the complete health of your vehicle, not just the oil level.
Every service is backed by our 12-month / 20,000 km guarantee on parts and labor.
Oil Change Services We Offer
From a standard conventional oil change to a full synthetic service for high-performance or high-mileage vehicles — we have the right solution for your engine.
Standard Oil Change
Conventional oil change using the correct viscosity for your vehicle — oil drained, filter replaced, refilled to manufacturer specification, and levels verified.
Synthetic Oil Change
Full synthetic oil change for maximum engine protection — better performance at extreme temperatures, longer service intervals, and superior resistance to breakdown and sludge formation.
Oil Filter Replacement
Every oil change includes a fresh filter. A clogged or bypassed filter stops trapping contaminants and allows dirty oil to circulate — we never reuse the old filter.
Comprehensive Vehicle Inspection
Every oil change includes a full multi-point inspection — brakes, tires, steering, suspension, belts, hoses, and all fluid levels checked and documented.
Fluid Level Inspection
Coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid all checked and topped off as needed during every service visit.
Engine Oil Flush
For engines with significant sludge buildup, a flush clears deposits before fresh oil is installed — ensuring the new oil goes into a clean system rather than mixing with contaminated residue.
High Mileage Oil Change
Specially formulated oils for higher-mileage engines — containing conditioners that help rejuvenate seals, reduce oil consumption, and minimize leaks common in older engines.
Oil Change with Fluid Top-Off
Oil change plus a complete top-off of all accessible fluid reservoirs — so you leave with a fully serviced vehicle, not just fresh engine oil.
Free Tire Pressure Check
All four tires checked and inflated to manufacturer specification with every oil change — because proper inflation affects fuel economy, tire wear, and handling safety.
Environmentally Friendly Oil Disposal
All used oil and filters are collected and disposed of responsibly through certified recycling channels — never poured down a drain or into a landfill.
Signs Your Vehicle Needs an Oil Change
Your vehicle communicates when oil is breaking down or running low. Don’t wait for multiple symptoms before taking action.
Oil Change or Pressure Warning Light
An illuminated oil change reminder or oil pressure warning light means your vehicle’s systems have detected low oil level, low pressure, or that your service interval has been reached. Address it promptly.
Dark, Gritty Oil on the Dipstick
Fresh oil is amber and slightly translucent. Oil that appears black, opaque, or feels gritty between your fingers has broken down and is full of contaminants — it’s no longer protecting your engine effectively.
Engine Ticking or Knocking Sounds
Ticking, tapping, or knocking from the engine — especially on cold starts — often indicates components aren’t receiving adequate lubrication. This can signal low oil level or severely degraded oil that’s lost its viscosity.
Oil Smell Inside the Cabin
A burning oil smell inside the vehicle can indicate an oil leak dripping onto hot exhaust components. This is both a fire risk and a sign that oil level may be dropping faster than expected between services.
Exhaust Smoke
Blue or grey smoke from the exhaust can indicate oil burning inside the combustion chamber — often a sign of worn seals or a high-mileage engine consuming oil faster than normal.
You’ve Reached Your Service Interval
The most reliable sign is simply that your interval is due — based on your vehicle’s manufacturer-recommended schedule. Check your owner’s manual or ask us and we’ll tell you exactly where you stand.
Synthetic vs. Conventional Oil
Both protect your engine — but they do it differently, at different price points, and with different service intervals. Here’s what matters when choosing.
Conventional Oil
- Refined directly from crude oil with natural impurities present
- Less uniform molecule structure — breaks down faster under heat and stress
- Suitable for most standard passenger vehicles in normal driving conditions
- Shorter service intervals — change more frequently per your owner’s manual
- Lower upfront cost per service
- Can be mixed with synthetic safely in an emergency — but dilutes synthetic benefits
Full Synthetic Oil
- Chemically engineered with uniform molecules and superior additive packages
- Better protection at temperature extremes — cold starts and high-heat operation
- Resists breakdown, oxidation, and sludge formation significantly longer
- Longer service intervals per manufacturer specification
- Required by many modern turbocharged and high-performance engines
- Recommended for high-mileage vehicles to reduce wear on older seals and components
Not sure which oil your vehicle needs? We look it up by your Year/Make/Model and use exactly what your manufacturer specifies — every time.
What an Oil Change at EDP Actually Includes
An oil change is not just draining and refilling. Here’s exactly what happens every time your vehicle comes in for an oil service at EDP Automotive.
Oil Change Time & Service Intervals
A professional oil change at EDP typically takes 30 to 60 minutes — including the full multi-point inspection. We work efficiently without cutting corners on the inspection process.
As for how often: always defer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Every manufacturer sets their own recommended interval based on your engine design, oil type, and operating conditions. Modern vehicles on full synthetic oil often have significantly longer intervals than older vehicles on conventional oil.
Unsure when your last service was or what interval your vehicle needs? Bring it in and we’ll check your service history and tell you exactly where you stand.
What Happens If You Don’t Change Your Oil?
Skipping or significantly delaying oil changes doesn’t just affect performance — it causes permanent, expensive damage that compounds the longer it’s ignored.
Oil Breaks Down & Thickens
As oil ages it oxidizes, loses viscosity, and accumulates combustion byproducts. What starts as a clear amber fluid gradually becomes a thick, dark sludge that can no longer flow freely through tight engine passages.
Sludge Blocks Oil Passages
Thickened oil sludge blocks the narrow galleries that feed oil to critical components like camshaft lobes, timing chains, and valve train components. Parts that stop receiving lubrication start wearing rapidly.
Engine Friction & Heat Spike
Without fresh oil providing a protective film between metal surfaces, friction increases dramatically. Friction generates heat, heat degrades remaining oil further, and the cycle accelerates toward component failure.
Increased Fuel Consumption
An engine fighting through thick, degraded oil has to work harder to maintain normal operation — drawing more fuel and producing more heat for the same output as a well-lubricated engine.
Accelerated Component Wear
Pistons, rings, bearings, camshafts, and crankshafts all depend on clean oil. Contaminated oil carries abrasive particles that act like fine sandpaper against precision-machined surfaces with tolerances measured in thousandths of a millimetre.
Engine Seizure
In the most severe cases, an engine starved of proper lubrication will seize — metal components weld themselves together from heat and friction. At this point the engine requires a full replacement, which can cost many times what regular oil changes would have cost over the vehicle’s lifetime.
Common Oil Questions Answered
Two questions we hear constantly at the shop — and the honest answers to both.
Can You Mix Synthetic and Conventional Oil?
Yes — it is safe to mix them and won’t damage your engine. Synthetic blend oils are exactly that: a mixture of conventional and synthetic base stocks. If you need to top off in an emergency and only one type is available, using it won’t cause harm.
However, adding conventional oil to a full synthetic system dilutes the premium protection benefits of the synthetic — lowering its effective service interval and reducing its performance at temperature extremes. As soon as possible, have it properly changed with the correct oil type.
Is It Okay to Go Over Your Oil Change Interval?
Going a small amount over your interval due to a road trip or scheduling delay is generally not catastrophic on a modern engine running quality oil. The consequences are proportional to how far over you go and what type of oil you’re running.
Going significantly over your interval accelerates engine wear, increases the risk of sludge formation, and can void manufacturer warranties that require documented maintenance at specified intervals. The oil life monitor in your vehicle provides a good guide — but it’s an estimate based on driving patterns, not a hard guarantee. When in doubt, change it.
While You’re in for an Oil Change
Our multi-point inspection catches issues beyond just the oil. If we find anything during your service, these are the two most common follow-up services.
