Warning Signs

Signs Your Transmission Needs Service

Seven of the most common symptoms Victoria drivers bring to us. If you’re noticing any of these, it’s time for a proper inspection.

Slipping RPMs surge between shifts or the engine revs without the car accelerating.
Hard or Delayed Shifts Shifts feel like a thunk, or there’s a noticeable pause before engagement.
Fluid Leak Red or reddish-brown fluid under the vehicle. Even small leaks demand attention.
Burning Smell Burnt smell after driving means overheated fluid that’s lost its protection.
Warning Light A dedicated transmission warning or a check engine light with trans codes.
Grinding (Manual) Grinding into gear — especially reverse — points to clutch or synchros.
Won’t Shift or Move Won’t engage or won’t move in drive. Stop driving and call us immediately.

Two Different Animals

Automatic vs. Manual Transmission Service

The two transmission types fail differently and call for different approaches. Here’s how we handle each — in-house and through our specialist partners.

Automatic

Service, Diagnostics & Replacement

Modern automatic transmissions are complex hydraulic and electronic systems. We focus on what we do well: thorough diagnostics, fluid service, external repairs, and when the unit is at the end of its life, replacement with a quality rebuilt unit from a trusted supplier. For deep internal rebuilds, we partner with specialists.

  • Diagnostic scan & road test
  • ATF fluid & filter service
  • External seal & cooler line repair
  • Sourced rebuilt unit replacement
  • Specialist referral for internal rebuilds
Manual

Clutch & Mechanical Service

Manual transmissions are mechanically simpler but have their own wear points: the clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing. Most “manual transmission” problems are actually clutch problems — and clutch replacement is one of our in-house specialties.

  • Complete clutch replacement
  • Pressure plate & throwout bearing
  • Pilot bearing & flywheel inspection
  • Shifter linkage & cable adjustment
  • External seal & mount repair
Is It Engine or Transmission?

Don’t Pay for the Wrong Repair

Transmission symptoms can be deceptive. A “slipping” feeling might be a failing transmission — or it might be a misfiring engine making the transmission look bad. Hesitation on acceleration could be either system. The cost of getting this wrong is real money.

Our diagnostic process always considers the surrounding systems. When the symptom could be either engine or transmission, we rule out the engine first using our full engine diagnostic process — before we recommend any transmission work.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to the questions Victoria drivers ask us most often about transmission repair.

What transmission work do you do in-house?
In-house we handle transmission diagnostics, fluid and filter service, clutch replacement (our specialty for manuals), external repairs like seals, shifter linkages, mounts, and cooler lines, and full unit replacement using quality rebuilt transmissions from trusted suppliers. For deep internal rebuilds, we refer you to a specialist transmission shop we trust.
Do you rebuild transmissions in-house?
No — and we’re honest about it. Internal transmission rebuilds are a specialty trade, and we believe the right move is to refer that work to specialists who do it every day. When an internal rebuild is what you need, we’ll point you to a trusted local transmission shop, or we can replace the unit with a quality rebuilt transmission from a supplier so you’re back on the road faster.
How do I know if it’s the transmission or the engine?
That’s exactly what diagnostics are for. Slipping, hesitation, and rough running can come from either system, and the symptoms overlap. We test both before recommending transmission work, so you don’t end up paying for the wrong fix.
What’s the difference between unit replacement and a rebuild?
A rebuild means a specialist disassembles your transmission, replaces worn internal parts, and reassembles it. A unit replacement means installing a different, already-rebuilt transmission from a supplier — quality-controlled and warrantied. We do unit replacement in-house. We refer rebuilds out to specialists.
Do you work on automatic and manual transmissions?
Yes — both, with different in-house capabilities. For manuals, clutch replacement is our specialty. For automatics, we do diagnostics, fluid service, external repairs, and unit replacement. Internal automatic rebuilds get referred to a specialist.
Do you service AWD and 4WD vehicles?
Yes. AWD and 4WD systems include the transmission, transfer case, front and rear differentials, and the driveshafts that connect them — we diagnose all of it and handle external work in-house. Internal differential or transfer case rebuilds get referred to a specialist.
How long does a transmission service take?
A fluid service is a same-day job. A clutch replacement is typically 1–2 days. A sourced unit replacement is usually 2–5 business days depending on parts availability from the supplier. We’ll give you a realistic timeline up front.
Will you give me an estimate before any work?
Always. We diagnose first, then explain what we found and provide a written estimate sent to your phone. No transmission work happens without your written approval — whether the work is in-house or going to a partner shop.
What happens if I keep driving with a transmission problem?
Small problems usually become bigger problems. Contaminated fluid damages internal components. A slipping transmission generates heat that destroys clutches. A failing clutch can damage the flywheel. Getting it diagnosed early is almost always cheaper than letting it run.
