Victoria, BC
Powerstroke acting up? Duramax down? Cummins running rough? Your diesel truck isn’t just a vehicle — it’s how you get the job done. EDP Automotive brings dealer-level diesel expertise with independent shop integrity. Fuel systems, turbos, DPF, EGR, head gaskets, and more. Light-duty trucks 1995–present. Serving Victoria since 1966.
Dealer-Level Tools. Independent Values. Since 1966.
A diesel truck isn’t just a bigger gas engine. The fuel systems run at pressures that can cut through steel. The emissions systems are complex enough that a single failed sensor can put your truck in limp mode. The head bolts stretch under thermal cycling in ways that destroy an engine if you don’t know what you’re doing.
EDP Automotive services light-duty diesel trucks from 1995 to present — Powerstroke, Duramax, and Cummins — with the diagnostic equipment, OEM service information, and platform-specific knowledge to get it right. No guessing, no parts-swapping. A real diagnosis, a written estimate, and your approval before we touch anything.
Every repair backed by our 12-month / 20,000 km guarantee on parts and labor.

Most Common Diesel Engine Problems
Six of the most frequent diesel complaints we see at EDP — what they mean and why they happen.
Fuel System Issues
Clogged injectors, failing high-pressure pumps, weak lift pumps, and fuel contamination are the leading cause of performance problems across all diesel platforms. Fuel system health directly determines everything else.
Loss of Power Under Load
Usually caused by clogged fuel filters, injector wear, turbocharger issues, restricted air intake, or a blocked DPF creating exhaust backpressure. Often the truck pulls fine at light throttle but feels flat when towing.
Excessive Black Smoke
Black smoke typically indicates incomplete combustion — over-fueling from a stuck injector, restricted airflow from a clogged air filter, or turbocharger problems preventing adequate boost pressure.
DPF Warning & Limp Mode
A clogged DPF restricts exhaust flow, triggers warning lights, reduces performance, and eventually forces the truck into limp mode. Failed regeneration cycles are usually the first sign the system is struggling.
Hard Starting or Long Crank
Cold starts that take multiple cranking attempts point to failing glow plugs or grid heaters, low compression from worn rings, weak battery voltage, or injectors that can’t build adequate rail pressure.
Overheating
On diesel trucks, overheating is often caused by a failing EGR cooler contaminating the coolant, a blocked oil cooler restricting flow, or a failing water pump — not just a stuck thermostat like on a gas engine.
High-Value Diesel Repairs We Specialize In
These are the repairs where experience and platform-specific knowledge separate a proper fix from an expensive misdiagnosis.
CP4 Pump Failure & Fuel System Rebuild
The Bosch CP4 high-pressure pump used on many 6.4L Powerstroke, LML Duramax, and some Cummins applications fails catastrophically on North American ULSD fuel — shedding metal particles that travel through every injector, fuel rail, and return line. When it fails, it’s not a pump replacement — it’s a complete fuel system rebuild. We diagnose the extent of contamination and replace everything that was exposed. Prevention kits and CP3 conversions are available for trucks that haven’t failed yet.
Head Gasket & ARP Stud Installation
High cylinder pressures and thermal cycling cause factory head bolts to stretch — particularly on the 6.0L Powerstroke, which is notorious for head gasket failures when the EGR cooler and oil cooler aren’t addressed first. We replace the head gasket using proper torque-to-yield sequences, and upgrade to ARP studs to prevent repeat failure. On 6.0L trucks, we always address the EGR cooler and oil cooler at the same time — because replacing the gasket without fixing the root cause means doing the job twice.
Turbocharger Replacement
Variable geometry turbos on modern diesel trucks use actuators and moveable vanes to control boost across the RPM range. When the actuator sticks or the vanes carbon up, you lose power, get excessive smoke, and the truck may go into limp mode. We diagnose whether it’s an actuator issue, a carbon buildup cleaning job, or a full turbo replacement — and replace with OEM-spec units, not cheap rebuilds.
Diesel Injector Replacement
Diesel injectors operate at extremely high pressures and fail in multiple ways — leaking internally (fuel in the oil), sticking open (excessive smoke and over-fueling), or restricted (rough idle and power loss). On LB7 Duramax trucks, all eight injectors typically fail together due to shared contamination. We perform cylinder contribution tests and injector balance testing to confirm which are actually failing before recommending replacement.
How We Diagnose Your Diesel
Diesel diagnosis requires more than pulling a code. We work through it systematically — because the wrong repair on a diesel fuel system is one of the most expensive mistakes in automotive service.
Emissions System Work — Done Legally & Done Right
EGR and DPF systems are a legitimate source of diesel truck problems. Clogged EGR valves choke performance. Cracked EGR coolers contaminate coolant. A blocked DPF creates enough exhaust backpressure to push a truck into limp mode.
We service, repair, and replace EGR valves, EGR coolers, diesel particulate filters, DEF systems, and SCR catalysts. All emissions work is performed legally and to manufacturer specification — we don’t perform EGR or DPF deletes for street-driven vehicles, as these modifications are illegal in Canada.
If your DPF is showing warning lights, failing regeneration cycles, or forcing the truck into reduced power mode — that’s a diagnosable, repairable condition. Get it looked at before it causes secondary damage.
Powerstroke vs. Duramax vs. Cummins — Reliability Overview
Every platform has strengths and known weaknesses. Here’s an honest overview from a shop that services all three daily.
Cummins
Ram 2500/3500 · 5.9L & 6.7L- Inline-six design — simpler, fewer moving parts than V8 competitors
- Widely regarded as the most durable and longest-lasting platform
- Lower long-term maintenance costs and easier component access
- Strong low-end torque — exceptional towing capability
- Known weaknesses: lift pump failures (5.9L/early 6.7L), grid heater failures, 6.7L DEF system faults
- Well-suited for high-mileage work truck use
Duramax
GM 2500/3500 · LB7 through L5P- Smooth power delivery and excellent Allison transmission pairing
- Strong reputation for overall reliability in fleet applications
- LB7 injector failures are the most common expensive repair
- LML generation: CP4 pump vulnerability on ULSD fuel
- Complex emissions architecture on newer generations
- Best choice for drivers who prioritize driving refinement alongside towing
Powerstroke
Ford F-250/350 · 6.0L, 6.4L, 6.7L- Top-tier factory horsepower and towing ratings
- 6.7L generation has resolved most historic issues — significantly more reliable
- 6.0L and 6.4L had significant factory reliability problems — require informed ownership
- 6.4L CP4 pump failure can be catastrophic if not addressed proactively
- Tight under-hood packaging makes repairs more labor-intensive
- Best suited for owners who want maximum raw performance with proper maintenance
Whichever platform you run, the most important factor in longevity is consistent maintenance and catching problems early. A well-maintained 6.0L Powerstroke outlasts a neglected Cummins every time.
