How Long Do Brake Pads Last?

Most standard brake pads last between 48,000 and 112,000 km depending on the pad material, your driving style, vehicle weight, and terrain. Organic pads wear fastest. Ceramic pads can last up to 160,000 km with gentle driving.

Front pads almost always wear faster than rear pads — when you brake, weight transfers forward, putting 60–80% of the stopping workload on the front axle. This is why front brake services are more frequent than rear.

Driving habits make the biggest difference. Highway drivers with gradual stopping distances get far more life from their pads than city drivers doing repeated hard stops at intersections.

Do You Need to Replace All Four Brakes at Once?

No — but you must always replace brakes in complete axle sets. Both front wheels together, or both rear wheels together. Never replace a single side on one axle.

Brake fade is a sudden, dangerous reduction in stopping power caused by excessive heat overwhelming the braking system. Understanding the types helps you prevent it.

Friction (Pad) Fade

When temperatures exceed safe thresholds, the binding resins inside the pads out-gas — creating a microscopic vapor layer between pad and rotor that causes the pad to slide helplessly across the disc. The pedal feels firm but the car barely slows down.

Fluid Fade

Intense heat transfers into the caliper and boils the brake fluid. Because brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, this water turns into compressible steam bubbles — and the pedal sinks to the floor without activating the calipers. This is why regular fluid flushes matter.

Green Fade
