Pulling or Drifting to One Side

Clunking, Knocking, or Rattling

Shocks vs. Struts — What’s the Difference?

The terms are used interchangeably but they’re fundamentally different components. Your vehicle uses one or the other at each wheel — never both.

Shock Absorbers

  • A standalone hydraulic or gas-filled damper — not a structural component
  • Mounts separately from the coil spring at each wheel location
  • Function: dampens spring bounce and controls wheel movement
  • Does not support vehicle weight or affect ride height
  • Can be replaced without a mandatory wheel alignment in most cases
  • Always replaced in pairs — both fronts or both rears at the same time

Struts

  • A structural assembly combining a damper, coil spring, and upper mount
  • Serves as the structural pivot point for steering and alignment geometry

Uneven tire wear is almost always a symptom of a suspension or alignment problem. The wear pattern tells you exactly where to look.

Inner or Outer Edge Wear

Wear concentrated on one edge of the tire indicates a camber or toe alignment problem — often caused by worn control arm bushings, bad ball joints, or components that have shifted geometry out of spec.

Cupping or Scalloped Dips

Rhythmic dips or scalloped patches across the tread are the signature of worn shocks or struts that can no longer dampen wheel bounce — the tire is repeatedly hopping and scrubbing against the pavement.

Feathering

Power steering failure doesn’t happen all at once — it starts with small symptoms that get progressively worse. Here’s what to watch for on both hydraulic and electric systems.

Heavy or Stiff Steering Wheel

Particularly noticeable at low speeds, during parking maneuvers, or on cold mornings. Hydraulic systems: low fluid or a failing pump. Electric systems: a failing motor or EPS control module fault.

Whining or Groaning When Turning

A high-pitched whine that increases with engine RPM when turning points to a hydraulic pump struggling with low fluid or failing internally. A deep groan indicates severe fluid starvation — get it inspected immediately.

Fluid Leak Under the Vehicle
