Why Your AC Isn’t Cooling Anymore

Automotive AC systems are sealed for a reason. When they stop performing, it’s rarely because they were “used up” — it’s usually because something let the refrigerant out, a component is failing, or an electrical issue is preventing the system from running properly. At EDP Automotive, we don’t just refill your refrigerant and send you down the road. We find the cause first, fix it once, and make sure your AC stays cold.

Common Symptoms

Signs Your Car AC Needs Repair

Eight of the most common AC and climate complaints Victoria drivers bring to us. If any of these sound familiar, it’s time for a proper inspection.

Blowing Warm or Lukewarm Air The most common AC complaint — usually low refrigerant from a leak, but could be compressor or electrical.
Weak Airflow Clogged cabin air filter, failing blower motor, or a blower resistor that’s lost speed settings.
Strange Smells Musty or moldy smell usually means bacteria on the evaporator. Sweet smell can mean a coolant leak.
Water in the Passenger Footwell Clogged AC condensate drain is the most common cause. A heater core leak is the worst-case.
AC Light Flashing Often a low refrigerant pressure switch protecting the compressor, or an AC clutch electrical fault.
One Side Hot, One Side Cold Almost always a blend door actuator failure, especially in vehicles with dual-zone climate control.
Defroster Won’t Clear the Windshield The defroster uses your AC to dehumidify the air. If AC is down, defrost suffers too.
Unusual Noises When AC Runs Squealing, grinding, or clicking from the AC area can indicate a failing compressor or clutch.

What We Do for Your Auto AC

From a quick recharge to a full compressor replacement, every part of your AC system gets the attention it needs.

AC Recharge & Leak Detection

Just topping off the refrigerant is a band-aid. We find the leak first, fix it, then recharge so your AC actually stays cold.

Compressor Replacement

The heart of the AC system. When the compressor fails, the system can’t produce cold air. We replace and properly flush the system.

Condenser & Evaporator Service

The condenser sits at the front of your vehicle (vulnerable to road debris). The evaporator hides in the dashboard. We service both.

Expansion Valve & Receiver-Drier

The smaller flow-regulating components. When the system is opened for major service, these get replaced as part of doing the job right.

Cabin Air Filter

Often overlooked, often the real cause of weak airflow and bad smells. A 10-minute fix that transforms how your climate system performs.

System Evacuation & Recharge

For R-134a systems, we evacuate, vacuum-test, and recharge in-house to OEM specifications. For newer R-1234yf systems, we handle the diagnosis and repair, then partner with a local shop for the final recharge.

Full Climate Control

Cool in Summer. Warm in Winter.

Most of this page focuses on AC because that’s where most complaints land — but the heating side gets the same care. Two systems, one shop.

Cooling

Full AC System Service

Diagnostics, recharge, compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion valve, cabin air filter, blower motor — everything that goes into a cold-blowing AC system.

  • R-134a recharge in-house
  • Leak detection under vacuum
  • Compressor & clutch diagnosis
  • Cabin filter & airflow restoration
  • Electric AC systems on hybrids & EVs
Heating

Heater & Defroster Service

When the cabin won’t warm up, the defroster won’t clear the windshield, or one side stays cold — that’s heating system work, and we handle all of it.

  • Heater core service & replacement
  • Thermostat & coolant flush
  • Blend door actuator repair
  • Blower motor & resistor diagnosis
  • Defroster system troubleshooting
Refrigerant Knowledge

R-134a vs. R-1234yf — What It Means for Your Repair

Newer vehicles (roughly 2017 and later) use R-1234yf refrigerant instead of the older R-134a. The two aren’t interchangeable, and the service equipment is completely different. Here’s how we handle each — honestly.

Older Systems

R-134a

The refrigerant used in most vehicles built before roughly 2017. We diagnose, repair, evacuate, and recharge R-134a systems fully in-house using our own equipment.

Newer Systems

R-1234yf

The newer refrigerant required on most vehicles built after 2017. We handle the diagnosis and the repair work in-house, then partner with a local shop that has the dedicated R-1234yf equipment for the final recharge. One conversation, two trusted hands.

When AC Problems Are Electrical

Climate Controls Are Electrical Systems

A surprising amount of “AC” and “heating” work is actually electrical. The AC clutch is electrical. The blower motor is electrical. Blend door actuators, blower resistors, AC pressure switches, climate control heads — all electrical.

When the root cause turns out to be a wiring issue, a failed sensor, or a control module problem instead of a refrigerant issue, our electrical diagnosis service is what fixes it. Same shop, same techs, same digital inspection report.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to the questions Victoria drivers ask us most often about car AC repair.

How often should my car AC be recharged?
A properly sealed AC system shouldn’t need to be recharged on a regular schedule. If your AC is losing refrigerant year after year, there’s a leak in the system — and that’s what needs to be addressed, not just the refrigerant level.
Why is my AC blowing warm air?
Most often, low refrigerant from a leak. Less commonly, a failed compressor, a stuck expansion valve, a blocked condenser, an electrical fault in the AC clutch circuit, or a refrigerant pressure switch protecting the system from running. Proper diagnostics tell you which it is.
Can I drive with broken AC?
In most cases, yes — the AC system is separate from the engine’s cooling system. The exception is if you have an internally seized AC compressor that’s grinding or making noise, because that can damage your drive belt. If you hear unusual noises from the AC area, get it inspected.
Do you work on hybrid and electric vehicle AC systems?
Yes. Hybrid and EV climate systems work differently — many use electric compressors instead of belt-driven units — and require service equipment rated for high-voltage components. We’re equipped for both, including the safety procedures these systems require.
Why does my AC smell musty when I turn it on?
That’s bacteria growth on the evaporator, very common in humid coastal climates like Victoria’s. We can treat the system to eliminate the smell and replace the cabin air filter to restore fresh airflow.
My heat works but my defroster doesn’t. Why?
The defroster uses your AC to dehumidify the air before heating it. If your AC isn’t working, the defroster can’t do its job — even in winter. AC repair fixes the defroster too.
Do you service both R-134a and R-1234yf refrigerants?
R-134a is in most vehicles built before roughly 2017 — we handle the full repair and recharge for those systems in-house. R-1234yf is required on most newer vehicles and requires dedicated equipment we don’t carry in-house. For R-1234yf vehicles, we do the diagnosis and the repair work and then partner with a local shop that has the R-1234yf equipment for the final recharge. You get one point of contact and a full repair either way.
How long does an AC repair take?
A recharge with leak detection is typically a same-day job. Compressor replacement is usually 1 day. Heater core replacement can take longer because the dash often has to come out to access it — we’ll give you a realistic timeline when we estimate the job.
Will you give me an estimate before any work?
Always. We diagnose first, then explain what we found and provide a written estimate sent to your phone. No AC work happens without your written approval.
