Coolant Leak

The most common cause. Hose connections, the radiator itself, the water pump gasket, or the heater core. If coolant is leaving the system, the engine can’t stay cool.

Thermostat Stuck Closed

A thermostat stuck in the closed position physically blocks coolant from reaching the radiator. The engine overheats rapidly from a cold start. One of the quickest and least expensive fixes.

Failed Water Pump

The water pump circulates coolant through the entire system. When its bearings fail or the impeller erodes, coolant stops moving — and the engine overheats, especially at idle.

Clogged or Damaged Radiator

Internal blockage from degraded coolant or external fin damage from road debris reduces the radiator’s ability to dissipate heat. The engine runs progressively hotter under load.

Dead Cooling Fan

The electric fan pulls air through the radiator when the vehicle is stopped or moving slowly. If the fan motor, relay, or temperature sensor fails, the engine overheats at idle but cools down at highway speed.

Head Gasket Failure

Turn Off the AC

The AC compressor adds load to the engine. Turning it off immediately reduces engine strain and heat output.

Turn On the Heater

The cabin heater is a secondary radiator. Running it on full blast pulls heat out of the coolant and buys you time.

Pull Over Safely

Find a safe spot and shut the engine off. Do not open the hood or the radiator cap until the engine has cooled completely — pressurised coolant can cause severe burns.

Why is my car overheating?

Can I drive my car if it’s overheating?
No. Continued driving with an overheating engine risks warped cylinder heads, a cracked engine block, or a blown head gasket — repairs that cost significantly more than the cooling system fix that would have prevented them. Pull over, let the engine cool, and call us.
Why does my car overheat at idle but cool down while driving?
At idle, there’s no natural airflow through the radiator — the electric cooling fan has to do the work. If the fan motor is dead, the relay has failed, or the temperature sensor that triggers the fan isn’t working, the engine overheats every time you stop. At speed, natural airflow compensates.
My coolant is full but the engine is still overheating. Why?
If the coolant level is fine, the problem is circulation or airflow. A failed water pump can’t push fluid, a stuck thermostat blocks flow, or a dead cooling fan can’t pull air through the radiator. Air pockets trapped in the system after previous coolant work can also prevent proper circulation.
Can a bad thermostat cause overheating?
Yes — a thermostat stuck closed physically blocks coolant from flowing to the radiator. The engine overheats rapidly, often within minutes of starting. It’s one of the most common and least expensive overheating repairs.
How do I know if my head gasket is blown?
Signs include white exhaust smoke that smells sweet, milky oil on the dipstick or under the oil cap, persistent overheating even after other cooling system repairs, bubbles in the coolant reservoir while the engine runs, and unexplained coolant loss with no visible leaks. A combustion leak test confirms it.
