Check Engine
Light On? Victoria, BC
That light is your vehicle asking for help. It could be a loose gas cap or a failing catalytic converter — you won’t know until it’s properly diagnosed. EDP Automotive reads the code, tests the system, and tells you exactly what’s wrong and what it takes to fix it.
A Code Is a Clue — Not a Diagnosis
The check engine light means your vehicle’s onboard computer has detected a fault and stored a diagnostic trouble code. That code points to a system or circuit — not a specific broken part. Replacing what the code "says" without testing the system is how drivers end up paying for parts they didn’t need.
At EDP Automotive, we pull the code, then verify it with live sensor data, a road test, and targeted component testing. You leave knowing what’s actually wrong — and what it costs to fix. For our full diagnostic process and equipment, visit our Engine Diagnostics page.
Steady Light vs. Flashing Light
These two states mean very different things. One can wait a few days. The other can’t.
Steady Check Engine Light
A steady light means the system has detected a fault but it’s not causing immediate damage. Common triggers include oxygen sensor faults, evaporative emission leaks, catalytic converter efficiency codes, and mass airflow sensor readings outside spec.
It’s safe to drive short term, but don’t ignore it. A small issue that triggers a code today can cause secondary damage that costs significantly more to repair later.
Flashing Check Engine Light
A flashing light means an active engine misfire severe enough to damage your catalytic converter. Unburned fuel is being dumped into the exhaust system and superheating the catalyst — which can destroy it in minutes of continued driving.
Reduce speed, avoid hard acceleration, and get to a shop as soon as possible. If the light is flashing and you smell exhaust or feel the engine shaking badly, pull over and call us.
Six of the Most Common Check Engine Light Causes
Some are inexpensive fixes. All get worse if ignored.
Oxygen Sensor Failure
Measures exhaust oxygen to calibrate the fuel mixture. A failing O2 sensor causes poor fuel economy, rough running, and increased emissions. One of the most common codes we see.
Loose or Damaged Gas Cap
The evaporative emission system monitors fuel vapour. A loose, cracked, or missing gas cap breaks the seal and triggers a code. Check it first — it’s the cheapest possible fix.
Catalytic Converter Efficiency
The converter cleans exhaust gases. When it degrades, downstream oxygen readings fall outside spec. Often caused by a misfire or failed sensor that went unrepaired — the converter is the victim, not the root cause.
Ignition Coil / Spark Plug
Worn spark plugs or a failing ignition coil cause misfires — the engine runs rough, hesitates on acceleration, and fuel economy drops. A flashing light with a misfire needs immediate attention.
Mass Airflow Sensor
Measures incoming air to calculate fuel delivery. A contaminated or failing MAF sensor causes hesitation, stalling, and poor fuel economy. Often caused by a dirty or incorrectly installed air filter.
EVAP System Leak
The evaporative emission system captures fuel vapours from the tank. A cracked hose, a stuck purge valve, or a faulty vent solenoid triggers a leak code. You may not notice any driveability change at all.
Code Reader vs. Professional Diagnostic
A parts store will read your code for free. Here’s why that’s not the same thing as a diagnosis.
Parts-Store Code Reader
- Pulls the code number and generic description
- Cannot read live sensor data or freeze-frame
- Cannot command actuators or run system tests
- Tells you the code — not what caused it
- Often leads to guessing and replacing the cheapest part first
EDP Professional Diagnostic
- Pulls codes from every module — engine, transmission, ABS, body
- Reads live sensor data and freeze-frame from the moment the fault occurred
- Commands actuators and runs manufacturer-specific system tests
- Road-tests to replicate the condition under real driving
- Tells you exactly which component failed and why
Our Complete Engine Diagnostic Process
This page covers the check engine light — what it means and what triggers it. Our full Engine Diagnostics page covers our 5-step process, the professional equipment we use, all eight dashboard warning lights, and the full list of driveability conditions we diagnose.

We Find the Problem — Not Just the Code
A code tells you a system flagged a fault. A diagnosis tells you which component failed, why it failed, and what it costs to fix. That distinction is the difference between one visit and three. EDP Automotive has been doing it right since 1966.
- Professional scan tools with OEM-level system access
- Live data, freeze-frame, and actuator testing — not just code reading
- Road test included to replicate the fault under real conditions
- Written estimate before any repair begins
- Digital inspection report with photos

EXCELLENT Based on 468 reviews Posted on Google Lise HaywardTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have been having my vehicles serviced by EDP for 20 years. EXCELLENT SERVICEPosted on Google Colin SvobodaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I would highly recommend EDP Automotive Services. Fran, Steve, and Daryl, were once again great to deal with. There aren't many garages I trust with my vehicles. When other shops refer folks to EDP it says a lot about their reputation and expertise. When it comes to custom suspension work or alignments this is the place. I'll be back in the future and recommend EDP to any friends or family.Posted on Google Dan ClaxtonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great people, very friendly.
