The Right Tire for How Victoria Actually Drives
Victoria winters are mild compared to the rest of Canada, but they are not easy on tires. Forget the Calendar. Follow the 7–7 Rule.
The best time to put winter tires on is not a date. It is the temperature. Below about 7°C, the rubber in all-season and summer tires stiffens and loses grip, even on dry pavement. Winter tire compounds are built to stay soft and flexible in that cold.
Put Winter Tires On
Once daily temperatures have sat at or below 7°C for about seven days in a row.
Take Them Off
Once temperatures stay above 7°C for about seven days. Soft winter rubber wears fast on warm roads.
Planning a trip over the Malahat or up-Island? Designated highway routes have their own winter tire requirements, so plan your changeover before that drive, not after.
Winter, All-Weather or All-Season?
Look at the sidewall. The symbol stamped there tells you what the tire is built for and whether it qualifies on BC’s designated winter routes.
Dedicated Winter
3-Peak Mountain Snowflake
The softest rubber and the most aggressive tread, with thousands of small slits (sipes) that bite into ice, slush and packed snow.
- Best for
- Regular Malahat or up-Island driving, early commutes on icy hills, and anyone who wants maximum cold-weather stopping power.
- Keep in mind
- Needs a seasonal changeover. Wears quickly if left on through warm weather.
All-Weather
3-Peak Mountain Snowflake
A year-round tire that still carries the snowflake symbol. Built to handle cold, wet roads and light snow without a seasonal swap.
- Best for
- Drivers who spend most of their time in Greater Victoria, see mostly rain and frost, and cross the Malahat now and then.
- Keep in mind
- Less ice grip than a dedicated winter tire in severe conditions.
All-Season
M+S (Mud and Snow)
The bare legal minimum on designated routes when tread is at least 3.5 mm. Fine in mild weather, weakest when it turns truly cold.
- Best for
- Mild city driving when temperatures rarely drop low and highway trips in winter conditions are rare.
- Keep in mind
- The rubber hardens below 7°C, which means longer stopping distances on cold, wet roads.
City Streets vs. the Malahat
In Victoria, the right answer depends less on the weather forecast and more on your route.
Mostly Greater Victoria
City streets across Victoria, Saanich, Esquimalt and the West Shore are not designated winter tire routes. You are not legally required to run winter tires to drive around town.
That does not make cold rubber safe. Consider what your mornings look like:
- Frost and black ice on shaded hills and bridges
- Cold rain that keeps roads slick for hours
- Occasional snowfall that the city is slow to clear
Over the Malahat or Up-Island
The Malahat section of Highway 1 is a designated winter tire route. During BC’s winter tire season, vehicles on it need tires that meet the provincial standard.
- M+S or 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake marking on the sidewall
- At least 3.5 mm of tread depth
- Summer tires are not permitted on designated routes
- Mountain passes on the mainland carry the same rule

Legal Isn’t the Same as Safe
A winter tire can pass the legal minimum and still struggle in snow. Deep tread is what channels slush and water away, and that ability fades well before the tire is bald.
Tread depth (mm)
- Under 3.5 mm: below the legal minimum on designated BC winter routes.
- Just above the legal minimum, around 4 mm: grip on snow and slush is fading. Time to plan a new set.
- Deeper tread: the range a winter tire is designed to work in.
