Alternator & Starter
Repair Victoria, BC
Clicking, slow cranking, a battery light or a car that dies after a boost? EDP Automotive tests the battery, starter and full charging system before replacing anything, so you never pay for a part you did not need. Written estimate first, backed by our 12‑month / 20,000 km guarantee.
The Wrong Part Is the Most Expensive Repair
When a car will not start, the battery usually takes the blame. Sometimes that is right. But a failing alternator can drain a brand-new battery quickly, and a bad starter relay can look exactly like a dead battery. Swapping parts until the problem goes away gets expensive fast.
At EDP Automotive, we test the whole starting and charging system: battery health, alternator output, starter draw, belts, cables and grounds. You get a clear answer on which part failed, a digital inspection report with photos and a written estimate before any work begins.

Battery, Starter or Alternator?
Three parts, three different jobs, and a lot of overlapping symptoms. Here is how they usually show up.
Battery
Stores the power needed to start the engine and run electronics while it is off.
Starter
An electric motor that spins the engine over when you turn the key or press start.
Alternator
Driven by the belt, it recharges the battery and powers the vehicle once it is running.
These are the usual suspects, not a diagnosis. Because the symptoms overlap, we test all three before replacing anything. Want more background first? Read our guide to why a car won’t start.
We Test Before We Replace
A new battery will not fix a failing alternator, and a new alternator will not fix a bad ground. This is how we find the real fault.
- Battery TestState of charge and a load test to see whether the battery can still deliver cranking power.
- Charging System TestAlternator output measured at idle and under electrical load.
- Starter TestCranking voltage and current draw, plus the relay and start circuit.
- Belt, Cables & GroundsBelt condition and tension, terminal corrosion, main cables and engine grounds.
- Drain CheckIf a battery keeps dying, we look for anything pulling power after shutdown.
What the numbers tell us
- Around 12.6 V: a fully charged battery at rest, engine off.
- About 13.6 to 14.4 V: a healthy charging system with the engine running.
- Well below or above that range: a battery or charging fault to track down.
Typical values. Exact specifications vary by vehicle and temperature.
Six Problems That Look Like a Bad Alternator or Starter
Plenty of alternators and starters get replaced when the real problem was something smaller. These are the ones we rule out first.
Worn or Slipping Belt
A glazed, cracked or loose serpentine belt cannot spin the alternator fast enough, so it looks like a charging failure.
Corroded or Loose Terminals
White or green buildup on the battery posts blocks current, mimicking a dead battery or a bad starter.
Blown Fuse or Bad Relay
A failed starter relay or fuse stops the start signal even when the battery is fully charged.
Bad Ground Connection
A rusted or loose engine ground interrupts the circuit and causes intermittent no-starts and flickering lights.
Ignition Switch or Immobilizer
A worn ignition switch, an active anti-theft system or a weak key fob battery can block the start sequence entirely.
Parasitic Drain
A module, light or accessory that stays on after shutdown slowly empties a healthy battery overnight.
When to Book vs. When to Act Now
Starting and charging problems rarely fix themselves, but some can leave you stranded much sooner than others.
Early Warning Signs
- Slower cranking than usual, especially on cold mornings
- A battery that has needed a boost once or twice
- Headlights that dim slightly at idle
- An occasional click before the car starts on the next try
Stranding Risk
- Battery warning light on while driving
- The engine dies shortly after a boost
- Grinding every time you start the engine
- A burning smell from the engine bay: stop driving and call us

I would highly recommend EDP Automotive Services. Fran, Steve, and Daryl, were once again great to deal with. There aren't many garages I trust with my vehicles. When other shops refer folks to EDP it says a lot about their reputation and expertise. When it comes to custom suspension work or alignments this is the place. I'll be back in the future and recommend EDP to any friends or family.Posted on Google![]()
