Low or Contaminated Coolant

The heating system runs on engine coolant. Low coolant level means less hot fluid reaching the heater core — so the vents blow cold or barely warm air. A leak somewhere in the system is usually the cause.

Thermostat Stuck Open

A thermostat stuck open allows coolant to continuously flow through the radiator, preventing the engine from reaching operating temperature. The heater core never gets hot fluid — and neither does your cabin.

Clogged Heater Core

Can a Bad Thermostat Affect My Heater?

Yes — it’s one of the leading causes of a heater blowing cold air. The thermostat regulates engine coolant temperature by controlling flow to the radiator. If it’s stuck open, the engine never reaches proper operating temperature — and neither does the coolant flowing through the heater core.

The result: the blower pushes air through a heater core that’s barely warm — and you get cold or lukewarm air from the vents even after driving for 20 minutes.

If it’s stuck closed, the opposite happens — the engine overheats rapidly while the heater core is simultaneously starved of coolant flow. Either failure needs immediate attention.

How Often Should Coolant Be Flushed?

Coolant doesn’t last forever. Over time it loses its chemical inhibitors, becomes acidic, and starts corroding the metals it’s supposed to protect — including the inside of your heater core, water pump, and radiator.
