Starting & Charging

The Wrong Part Is the Most Expensive Repair

When a car will not start, the battery usually takes the blame. Sometimes that is right. But a failing alternator can drain a brand-new battery quickly, and a bad starter relay can look exactly like a dead battery. Swapping parts until the problem goes away gets expensive fast.

At EDP Automotive, we test the whole starting and charging system: battery health, alternator output, starter draw, belts, cables and grounds. You get a clear answer on which part failed, a digital inspection report with photos and a written estimate before any work begins.

Symptom Finder

Battery, Starter or Alternator?

Three parts, three different jobs, and a lot of overlapping symptoms. Here is how they usually show up.

B

Battery

Stores the power needed to start the engine and run electronics while it is off.

S

Starter

An electric motor that spins the engine over when you turn the key or press start.

A

Alternator

Driven by the belt, it recharges the battery and powers the vehicle once it is running.

What you noticeMost likely culprit
Rapid clicking when you turn the keyEnough power for the solenoid to click, not enough to crank.
BBatteryTerminals
One loud click, dash lights bright, no crankPower is there but the motor is not turning the engine.
SStarterRelay
Slow, laboured crankingWorse on cold mornings or after the car sits.
BBatterySStarter
Starts with a boost, dies soon afterThe engine is running on borrowed power that is not being replaced.
AAlternator
Battery warning light while drivingThe charging system is not keeping up with demand.
AAlternatorBelt
Lights dim at idle, brighten when you revCharging output is dropping at low engine speed.
AAlternator
Grinding noise when startingThe starter gear is not engaging the flywheel cleanly.
SStarter
Whining or growling from the engine bayOften a worn alternator bearing or belt tensioner.
AAlternatorBelt
A new battery keeps going flatSomething is not recharging it, or something is draining it.
AAlternatorParasitic drain
Total silence, nothing on the dashNo power reaching the system at all.

These are the usual suspects, not a diagnosis. Because the symptoms overlap, we test all three before replacing anything. Want more background first? Read our guide to why a car won’t start.

How We Test

We Test Before We Replace

A new battery will not fix a failing alternator, and a new alternator will not fix a bad ground. This is how we find the real fault.

  1. Battery TestState of charge and a load test to see whether the battery can still deliver cranking power.
  2. Charging System TestAlternator output measured at idle and under electrical load.
  3. Starter TestCranking voltage and current draw, plus the relay and start circuit.
  4. Belt, Cables & GroundsBelt condition and tension, terminal corrosion, main cables and engine grounds.
  5. Drain CheckIf a battery keeps dying, we look for anything pulling power after shutdown.

What the numbers tell us

1112131415 VOLTS
  • Around 12.6 V: a fully charged battery at rest, engine off.
  • About 13.6 to 14.4 V: a healthy charging system with the engine running.
  • Well below or above that range: a battery or charging fault to track down.

Typical values. Exact specifications vary by vehicle and temperature.

Before You Buy Parts

Six Problems That Look Like a Bad Alternator or Starter

Plenty of alternators and starters get replaced when the real problem was something smaller. These are the ones we rule out first.

01

Worn or Slipping Belt

A glazed, cracked or loose serpentine belt cannot spin the alternator fast enough, so it looks like a charging failure.

02

Corroded or Loose Terminals

White or green buildup on the battery posts blocks current, mimicking a dead battery or a bad starter.

03

Blown Fuse or Bad Relay

A failed starter relay or fuse stops the start signal even when the battery is fully charged.

04

Bad Ground Connection

A rusted or loose engine ground interrupts the circuit and causes intermittent no-starts and flickering lights.

05

Ignition Switch or Immobilizer

A worn ignition switch, an active anti-theft system or a weak key fob battery can block the start sequence entirely.

06

Parasitic Drain

A module, light or accessory that stays on after shutdown slowly empties a healthy battery overnight.

When to Book vs. When to Act Now

Starting and charging problems rarely fix themselves, but some can leave you stranded much sooner than others.

Early Warning Signs

  • Slower cranking than usual, especially on cold mornings
  • A battery that has needed a boost once or twice
  • Headlights that dim slightly at idle
  • An occasional click before the car starts on the next try

Stranding Risk

  • Battery warning light on while driving
  • The engine dies shortly after a boost
  • Grinding every time you start the engine
  • A burning smell from the engine bay: stop driving and call us

Battery light on the road? Switch off heated seats, the rear defroster and other extras, and head straight to a shop. Your vehicle is running on battery power alone.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions Victoria drivers ask us most about starting and charging problems.

How can I tell if it’s the battery, alternator or starter?
Rapid clicking or slow cranking usually points to the battery. A single click with bright dash lights and no crank usually points to the starter. A car that starts with a boost but dies soon after, or shows a battery light while driving, usually points to the alternator. Because symptoms overlap, testing all three is the only way to be sure.
What does it mean when my car clicks but won’t start?
Rapid clicking almost always means the battery has enough charge to click the starter solenoid but not enough to spin the engine, often from a weak battery or corroded terminals. One loud click with no crank more often points to the starter or its relay.
Can a bad alternator drain a new battery?
Yes. If the alternator is not recharging the battery while you drive, even a brand-new battery will run flat. A parasitic drain, where something stays on after the vehicle is shut off, can do the same thing. We test for both.
Is it safe to drive with the battery light on?
Only for a short distance. The light means the charging system is not keeping up, so the vehicle is running on stored battery power and can stall once it runs out. Turn off non-essential electrical accessories and drive straight to a shop.
What can be mistaken for a bad alternator?
A weak battery is the most common one. Others include a worn or slipping serpentine belt, corroded or loose battery terminals, a bad ground connection and a faulty voltage regulator. That is why we test before we replace.
How long does an alternator last?
Many alternators last somewhere between 130,000 and 240,000 km, or roughly 7 to 10 years. Engine bay heat, oil or coolant leaks, heavy electrical loads from accessories and incorrect belt tension can all shorten that.
How much does alternator or starter replacement cost?
It depends on your vehicle, the part and how hard it is to reach. Every job is quoted after inspection, so contact us for a quote.
Will I get an estimate before any work?
Always. We test first, explain what we found in plain language and provide a written estimate. You also receive a digital inspection report with photos. No work happens without your approval.

I would highly recommend EDP Automotive Services. Fran, Steve, and Daryl, were once again great to deal with. There aren't many garages I trust with my vehicles. When other shops refer folks to EDP it says a lot about their reputation and expertise. When it comes to custom suspension work or alignments this is the place. I'll be back in the future and recommend EDP to any friends or family.
