Six Reasons Brakes Squeak or Grind
Some are minor. Some need immediate attention. Only inspection tells you which.
Worn Brake Pads
The most common cause. Brake pads are consumable components — the friction material wears down with every stop. When it gets thin enough, the wear indicator squeals or the backing plate grinds.
Glazed Pads or Rotors
Heat from aggressive braking or dragging calipers can harden the pad surface and leave a glassy finish on the rotor. Glazed brakes squeak and have reduced stopping power.
Warped Rotors
Excessive heat causes the rotor to lose its flat surface. The result is a pulsation through the brake pedal and sometimes a rhythmic scraping sound as the pad contacts the high spots.
Stuck or Seized Caliper
A caliper that doesn’t release fully keeps the pad pressed against the rotor. That generates constant friction, heat, noise, and uneven pad wear — and the vehicle may pull to one side.
Worn or Missing Hardware
Brake pad clips, shims, and slide pins keep the pads aligned and quiet. When they corrode, break, or go missing, the pads rattle and vibrate against the caliper bracket — creating noise even with plenty of pad life left.
Contamination
Brake dust buildup, road debris, or moisture between the pad and rotor can cause intermittent squeaking — especially first thing in the morning or after the vehicle sits in rain. Often resolves after a few stops but should be inspected if persistent.
