Worn Suspension Creeps Up on You

Shocks and struts do not fail overnight. They lose a little control every month, so the extra bounce, the dip when you brake and the vague feel on the highway start to seem normal. Meanwhile, your tires are wearing unevenly and your stopping distances are getting longer.

At EDP Automotive, we put your vehicle on the hoist and look at every part of the system: shocks and struts, mounts, bushings, ball joints, tie rods and the power steering system. Then we road test it and tell you exactly what is worn, with photos in your digital inspection report and a written estimate before any work begins.

Warning Signs

Six Signs Your Shocks or Struts Are Worn

Suspension wears so gradually that most drivers get used to it. These are the signs worth paying attention to.

01

Bouncing After Bumps

The body keeps rising and falling after a dip or speed bump instead of settling right away. The shock can no longer control the spring.

02

Nose Dive or Squat

The front end dips hard when you brake, or the rear squats when you accelerate. That weight shift lengthens stopping distances.

03

Body Roll in Corners

The vehicle leans or sways heavily on turns, lane changes or in crosswinds, and feels less planted than it used to.

04

Cupped Tire Wear

Patchy high and low spots around the tread happen when a tire bounces instead of staying pressed to the road.

05

Oily or Wet Shock Body

Fluid weeping down the outside of a shock or strut means the internal seal has failed and damping is already fading.

06

Clunks and Knocks

Knocking over bumps or when turning often points to worn strut mounts, bushings, sway bar links or ball joints.

Try This at Home

The 30-Second Bounce Test

It will not replace an inspection, but it is a quick way to tell whether your suspension deserves a closer look.

  1. Park on level groundEngine off, parking brake on.
  2. Push down hard on one cornerLean your weight onto the bumper or fender above the wheel, then let go quickly.
  3. Count the bouncesA healthy corner comes back up and settles within one or two movements. More than that points to worn shocks or struts.

What happens after a bump

time after the bump
Healthy: settles in 1 to 2 bounces Worn: keeps bouncing
Know the Difference

Shocks vs. Struts: What’s the Difference?

Both control bounce, but they are not interchangeable. Each wheel position on your vehicle uses one or the other, not both.

Damping only

Shock Absorber

A hydraulic damper that controls how the spring moves. It does not hold up the vehicle; a separate spring carries the weight.

  • Common on the rear of many cars and on trucks and SUVs
  • Replacement does not usually change wheel alignment angles
  • Replaced in pairs across the axle
Structural

Strut

A load-bearing part of the suspension. The coil spring wraps around it, it supports the vehicle’s weight and it helps set the wheel’s angles.

  • Found on the front of most cars and crossovers
  • An alignment check is needed after replacement
  • Often replaced as a complete assembly with the spring and mount
Steering Problems

When the Steering Wheel Tells You Something

Steering and suspension share parts and wear together. A heavy wheel, a whine or a vague feel on the highway usually points to one of two systems, depending on your vehicle.

Hydraulic Power Steering

A belt-driven pump pushes fluid to the steering rack. Low fluid, leaks or a tired pump show up as whining and heavy steering.

Electric Power Steering

An electric motor assists the steering. Faults often trigger a warning light and can make the wheel suddenly heavy.

Heavy or Stiff SteeringLow fluid, a failing pump or an electric power steering fault. Get it checked before it gets worse at low speed.
Whining or Groaning When TurningCommon on hydraulic systems with low fluid or a worn pump, especially noticeable when parking.
Fluid Under the Front EndReddish or amber drips near the front wheels can mean a leaking hose, pump or steering rack seal.
Loose or Wandering SteeringPlay in the wheel or constant small corrections on the highway point to worn tie rod ends, ball joints or rack components.
Off-Centre or Shaking WheelOften alignment, but worn steering linkage can cause it too. We check both before adjusting anything.

Two Rules We Always Follow

1

Replace in Pairs

Both front or both rear, never one side. Mismatched damping makes the vehicle pull and handle unevenly.

2

Align After Struts

Struts help set wheel angles. An alignment check afterward protects your tires and keeps the vehicle tracking straight.

Why They Wear Out

What Shortens Suspension Life

Shocks and struts rarely fail all at once. They lose control a little at a time, which is why regular inspection matters.

Typical service life 80,000to160,000 km

Many shocks and struts start losing damping somewhere in this range. Rough roads, heavy loads and age can bring that point much sooner.

Potholes & Curbs

Hard hits can bend a piston rod or damage internal valves in an instant.

Seal & Fluid Wear

Every bump cycles the fluid. Over time it thins, seals wear and damping fades.

Heavy Loads & Towing

Extra weight compresses the suspension harder and more often than it was built for.

Moisture & Road Grime

Wet roads and grime corrode mounts and attack seals once they start to wear.

Age

Rubber bushings and mounts dry out and crack over the years, even on vehicles that do not rack up many kilometres.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions Victoria drivers ask us most about shocks, struts and steering.

How do I know if my shocks or struts are bad?
The most common signs are bouncing that continues after a bump, the front end diving when you brake, heavy body roll in corners, cupped tire wear, fluid on the outside of the shock or strut, and clunking over bumps. A hoist inspection and road test confirm what is actually worn.
What is the difference between shocks and struts?
A shock absorber only controls bounce, while a separate spring holds up the vehicle. A strut is a structural part of the suspension: the coil spring wraps around it, it supports the vehicle’s weight and it helps set wheel alignment angles. Each wheel position uses one or the other.
How long do shocks and struts last?
Many start losing damping somewhere between 80,000 and 160,000 km, but rough roads, towing, heavy loads and age can shorten that. We check suspension condition during routine service so you know where yours stand.
Can I drive with bad shocks or struts?
You can usually drive short term, but worn shocks and struts increase stopping distances, reduce control on wet roads and in emergency manoeuvres, and wear out tires faster. A leaking unit, a broken mount or loud clunking should be checked soon.
Do shocks and struts need to be replaced in pairs?
Yes. Replacing both on the same axle keeps damping balanced side to side. Replacing only one can make the vehicle pull, lean unevenly and handle unpredictably.
Why is my steering wheel hard to turn?
On hydraulic systems, the usual causes are low power steering fluid, a leak or a failing pump. On electric power steering, it is often a sensor, motor or electrical fault, sometimes with a warning light. Worn steering linkage can also add resistance.
How much does shock or strut replacement cost?
It depends on your vehicle, whether it uses shocks or struts, and whether an alignment is needed afterward. Every job is quoted after inspection, so contact us for a quote.
Will I get an estimate before any work?
Always. We inspect on the hoist and road test first, explain what we found in plain language and provide a written estimate. You also receive a digital inspection report with photos. No work happens without your approval.

I would highly recommend EDP Automotive Services. Fran, Steve, and Daryl, were once again great to deal with. There aren't many garages I trust with my vehicles. When other shops refer folks to EDP it says a lot about their reputation and expertise. When it comes to custom suspension work or alignments this is the place. I'll be back in the future and recommend EDP to any friends or family.
