Transmission
Slipping? Victoria, BC
RPMs climbing without acceleration. Delayed shifts. A shudder between gears. These are signs your transmission needs professional attention — not a fluid flush and a prayer. EDP Automotive diagnoses the actual fault and gives you an honest assessment of what it takes to fix it.
Transmission Slipping Is a Warning — Not a Death Sentence
A slipping transmission doesn’t always mean a full rebuild. It can be caused by low or degraded fluid, a failing solenoid, a worn clutch pack, or an electrical fault in the transmission control module. The difference between a minor repair and a major one often comes down to how quickly you get it diagnosed.
At EDP Automotive, we start with a fluid check, a scan of the transmission module for stored codes, and a road test to replicate the symptom under real driving conditions. You get a clear explanation of what’s happening and a written estimate before any work begins. For our full transmission service menu, visit our Transmission Repair page.
How Transmission Slipping Feels Behind the Wheel
Drivers describe transmission slipping in different ways. Here’s what to watch and feel for.
Six Reasons a Transmission Slips
Some are minor. Some are major. Only diagnosis tells you which one you’re dealing with.
Low or Degraded Fluid
Transmission fluid is the hydraulic lifeblood of the system. Low fluid from a leak or burnt fluid from age reduces hydraulic pressure — and without pressure, clutches can’t engage properly.
Worn Clutch Packs
Internal clutch plates wear over time and lose their friction material. When they can’t grip, the transmission slips between gears — especially under load or during upshifts.
Failing Shift Solenoids
Solenoids are electro-hydraulic valves that direct fluid flow to engage each gear. A failing solenoid causes delayed, harsh, or skipped shifts. Often fixable without a full rebuild.
Torque Converter Problems
The torque converter transfers engine power to the transmission. A worn lockup clutch inside the converter causes shudder at highway speeds and can mimic a slipping transmission.
Transmission Control Module Fault
The TCM decides when and how the transmission shifts based on sensor inputs. A software glitch, a failed sensor, or a wiring issue can cause erratic shifting and false slip conditions.
Worn Bands (Automatic)
Bands wrap around gear sets inside the transmission to hold them stationary. When bands wear or their adjustment is off, the transmission can’t hold certain gears — and it slips out.
Automatic vs. Manual — Slipping Feels Different
Both types can slip, but the symptoms and causes are distinct.
Automatic Transmission
- RPMs flare between shifts without driver input
- Delayed engagement when shifting from Park to Drive
- Harsh or jerky shifts that weren’t there before
- Shudder during torque converter lockup at highway speed
- Causes: low fluid, worn clutch packs, solenoids, bands, TCM faults
Manual Transmission
- Engine revs climb but the car doesn’t accelerate in gear
- Clutch pedal engages very high or very low
- Burning smell from the clutch after normal driving
- Difficulty getting into or staying in gear
- Causes: worn clutch disc, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, hydraulic leak

EXCELLENT Based on 468 reviews Posted on Google Lise HaywardTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have been having my vehicles serviced by EDP for 20 years. EXCELLENT SERVICEPosted on Google Colin SvobodaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I would highly recommend EDP Automotive Services. Fran, Steve, and Daryl, were once again great to deal with. There aren't many garages I trust with my vehicles. When other shops refer folks to EDP it says a lot about their reputation and expertise. When it comes to custom suspension work or alignments this is the place. I'll be back in the future and recommend EDP to any friends or family.Posted on Google Dan ClaxtonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great people, very friendly.
